    The Naval Academy Information program (NAIP) is very often referred to as the Blue and Gold Program. The primary governing instruction for the NAIP is OPNAV Instruction 1531.2B. The NAIP is a voluntary program consisting of active duty and Naval Reserve officers, retired military personnel, alumni, and interested civilians. Since its inception, the NAIP has played a major role in increasing the number of applicants and improving the quality of the candidates admitted to the Naval Academy. Naval Academy Information Officers (NAIOs) can apply by being recommended through the Candidate Guidance Office (CGO) or by another NAIO/A. Reservists can apply for retirement credits by completing OPNAVINST 1531.6F Retirement Credits Report Form II-A. Reservists are assigned to NAVCRUITCOM 1886 under the CINCATLANTIC, RADM G.F. Miller, USN. Reporting senior is ADM C.R. Larson, USN, the 51st Superintendent of the Naval Academy.

    An individual student candidate must supply his/her PCQ no later than 31 January of the year in which they plan to enter the Academy, although it is preferrable that the student begin the application process early in the 11th grade. Each PCQ is evaluated by an Admissions Officer and then entered into the Admissions Information System (AIS). From this point, one of four things can happen based on the applicant's PSAT/SAT/ACT scores:

    1). PNOM (Prospective Nominee) LETTER:This letter informs an applicant that they are an official candidate (see Appendix V-F). They are assigned a candidate number and their NAIO interview status will be an "I" for interview. The interview should be completed within thirty days. All interviews must be received by the Academy Admissions board no later than 1.4.98. A candidate packet will be mailed to them at the appropriate time. Normal qualifying scores to gain Candidate status for majority candidates are 530V/600M for SAT (22 English/26 Math for ACT) and 530V/530M (22E/22M) for minority candidates.

    The current class of 2001 includes 18% (219) minority midshipmen, 16.5% women, and 4.2% sons or daughters of Naval Academy alumni. All prospective candidates need to be able to complete a run of 1.5 mi. in 10:30 minutes or less (12:40 for women), be able to successfully perform a tower jump (five-, 7.5-, and ten meters) into the pool, Life at the Academy begins on Indoctrination Day (I-Day) and culminates four years later at graduation, at which time midshipmen are commissioned as an O1/O2 in the USN, the USNR, or the USMC.The cost of a Naval Academy education is approximately $30,000, and most graduates serve an average of 10.68 years in the Navy after graduation.
