For your reading pleasure, the complete rule for transcribing indexes is provided. An example that shows a relatively common style index is provided below
Some key rules:
- main entries in Cell 1, runovers in Cell 3 for indexes with only main entries
- main entries in Cell1, runovers in Cell 5, subentries indented to Cell 3 with runovers to Cell 7, sub-subentries to Cell 5, etc.
- no blank lines between index entries. The rule says no blank lines before or after centered initial letter alphabetic markings, but you will see examples that follow the print and put a blank line before the centered single letter.
- Generally, ignore special typefaces (bold, italics) if everything in the index is done that way, otherwise follow the print.
In the example below, the transcriber choose to ignore the special bold typeface of the initial alphabetic letter, and choose to put a blank line before the "L", the second alphabetic group in the list.
